  Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Appearance
Dark brown, no actually more like black. No light makes it through this. Stout like
in color, head is a dark tan with a creamy and just mildly rocky character.
Brown
ale is a bit of a misnomer as far as color is concerned. Black as the darkest
stouts, maybe even intimidating for a brown ale drinker. No surprise this beer is
viscous with much in solution. Nice lasting head with large bubbles and strong
lacing.

Aroma
As strong as any beer aroma. Punches out with sweet malt, pear, wood, spice,
and alcohol. Astounding for both the style or just generally speaking.
Warm dark
caramel aroma. Sweet and brandy-like. Vanilla and alcohol are strong notes.
Powerful and cultured with character. Back tones of wood and roast with some
rich seasonal fruitiness.

Palate
Interesting, both a creamy quality and yet crisp carbonation at the same time. A
delicious roasted malt flavor like that of a good stout; I was a bit surprised that
there was not more sweetness. Aged wood flavor starts to come out early.
Powerful warming quality with a bit of milk like sweetness. Imagine crossing a
barleywine with a milk stout. Strangely this ale has a softness as all of the strong
flavor elements converge. Heat is paramount and this is a different beer drinking
experience.

Finish
Wow, I thought the palate flavors were strong but my taste buds just got drop
kicked into the finish ! Complex wood flavor, roasted malt, pears, multiple hoppy
notes, just a very mild background sweetness, wrapped up with more wood flavor
at the very end. The strong alcohol warming component exceeds that of any beer
that I can recall.
The oaking of the ale is noticeable as it imparts a dry tannin feel
to the mouth. The dark malt remains and leaves no doubt as to the ales
intentions.

Synopsis
If you like woody flavors, complexity, and alcohol strength, you will want to try this
one. A wonderfully special ale which is in a category of its own. Quality brown ale
qualities plus some barleywine style ale, stout, porter, and even Scotch style ale
attributes thrown in. I love the beer, its great for those who don't like their beer too
sweet. So unique and strong its non-conformity to the "pure bred" brown ale style
had to hold it back a bit in score since ratings are relative to category. Make no
mistake though, this is still an "A" rated beer and definitely deserves to be.
Definitely a sipping ale. Very impressive taste for the alcohol content, this one
could not have been easy to make. Dogfish Head excels in specialty types of
beer. For mature tastes, a very interesting buzz...Whew !!
An unfiltered, unfettered, unprecedented Brown Ale aged in handmade wooden
brewing vessels. The caramel and vanillla complexity unique to this ale comes
from the exotic Paraguayan Palo Santo wood from which these tanks were
crafted. At 10,000 gallons each, these are the largest wooden brewing vessels
built in America since before Prohibition. It's all very exciting. We have wood. Now
you do too.
