Our Ale List
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Milton, DE
A clean, well-hopped brown ale with aromatic barley, carmelized brown sugar
and whole-leaf Liberty & Goldings hops.
Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Appearance
Wonderful color, very dark brown and reddish tones are seen when holding this
beer up to a light. No cloudiness here, perfectly clear. All that I would expect from
a quality brown ale. Has a nice light beige head, rocky and lasting. Dark and brick
red to brown, under a light it had a scarlet sheen. Rocky head full of character.
Beautiful and composed.
Aroma
Very strong aroma, easy to smell, and I appreciate the quality. Very sweet fruity
tones hit the nose, in particular an aroma of pears. Full, oak, fig, general rich
smells. Also spicy, earthy, and malty with alcohol presence. Very intriguing,
makes one wonder (pleasantly) what they are getting into.
Palate
Pleasant roasted malt flavor and creamy mouth feel, very enjoyable. Good but not
complex, the one dimensional nature is what stopped a perfect score here. Big
beer. A brown ale fortified unlike others of its style. Hard malt with roast, just a
component, not like a porter. Think of a light barleywine.
Finish
Again pleasant. Additional flavors come alive. Some "wood-like" tones, and a hint
of the pear sweetness but not as much as the aroma suggests, if it was it would
have been too sweet. The roasted malt flavor also grows in strength. Very good
flavor and gains some complexity. A little more strength and complexity would
have resulted in a perfect score here. Hardy, amazingly so. Powerful, no
subtleties, grabs in a good way. Its a hybrid. Solid, dry and malty in finish. Tannin
like a wine with some sweet but not overly so.
Synopsis
An impressive ale, definitely in the "buy this again" category. Only slightly held
back the score because this ale only slightly lacked complexity and strength, but
enjoyable. Best description is a light barleywine, having the heft but missing
some of the sweet. Dynamic and fruity but bottom fruity as a raisin or dried fruit.
Overall very good but trying to be many things and succeeding as well.
