Our Ale List
Great Lakes Brewing Co., Cleveland, OH
Named after Patrick Conway, the grandfather of co-owners Pat and Dan Conway
and a popular Cleveland policeman who directed traffic for 25 years only blocks
from the brewery. Conway's Irish Ale is a ruby red, medium-bodied beer with a
notable toasty flavor. In keeping with the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, this beer is
traditionally brewed from all-natural ingredients: barley, hops, yeast and water.
No chemicals or preservatives are used.

Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Appearance
Beautiful color, clear as a bell, but not as advertised. Label quoted as a ruby red
but instead it is an impressive medium dark copper amber tone. Head was OK,
off-white, but not particularly rocky or expressive and not as long lasting as some
other ales. Very light, effervescent, borderline blond in color. A surprise, expected
a darker red. No cloudiness, and I mean no cloudiness, almost shiny. Light head
dissipates somewhat quickly.
Aroma
Good strength of aroma, one dimensional meaning all fruity tones, but
multidimensional meaning a few different fruit tones detected. Aroma is mostly
apple, with just a hint of pear and kiwi-like smell. Surprisingly malty, definite
sweetness, some small citrus. It strikes me as the ale version of a wheat lager
minus the wheat malt, go figure.
Palate
Crisp and lightly fruity, pleasant, but thin on mouth feel for an ale. Incredibly crisp,
dry, and light for an ale. This beer is soft and should have wide appeal - it drinks
as smooth as a lager style.
Finish
Finish picks up in strength showing more fullness and complex ale qualities. In
additon to the light fruity tones a toastiness awakens along with just good barley
malt flavor. So soft for a beer of its type. Very refreshing. A little bit of acid from the
hop gives it just a subtle bite. I wouldn't say it has a creamy quality yet it does stay
on the drinkers tongue in a positive way.
Synopsis
A light and pleasant tasting beer, I would estimate this one to have good
summertime appeal. This beer is enjoyable, just very light compared to other ales
available. A good choice for those wanting a relatively light, soft beer, without any
significant presence of hops. Had this beer been in a lager or even pilsner
category it would have had a perfect score. I doubt this is what the Irish are
drinking but they should give it a try. Difficult to rate in the sense that we rate within
categories and this could just as easily be a summer release. invigorating flavor.
