Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Great Lakes Brewing Co., Cleveland, OH
"DON'T GIVE UP THE SIP" Medium-bodied and well hopped with a dry, fruity
aftertaste, our monumental India Pale Ale honors the hero from The War of 1812
who battled the enemy on Lake Erie. In keeping with the Bavarian Purity Law of
1516, this beer is traditionally brewed from all natural ingredients: barley, hops,
yeast, and water. No chemicals or preservatives are used.
Appearance
A light to medium copper tone with a bit of a shine. Head is just barely off-white
in color and of long duration. The head has a basically creamy texture with a
slight amount of rockiness. Beer is effervescent and has just a touch of
cloudiness. Like Don Ho, tiny bubbles rule the day. Nice amber to light brown
color. A good head for an IPA. Satisfying appearance overall, light in character
with some strong attributes. Very slight cloudiness contributes to a less than
perfect score in this category.
Aroma
Nice and strong, hops permeate the sinuses in force with a little bite to grab your
attention. The aroma is complex, after recovering from the initial hop zing, sweet
and tangy citrus is noticed, basically orange, grapefruit, and lime. Spicy with
some sourness. More malt to hop ratio. Strangely some alcohol warmth. A lot of
depth, a hop zing with a solid back note of malt ingredient.
Palate
Immediate flavor, the citrus strikes the tongue with tangy lime, mildly bitter
grapefruit, and surprisingly sweet orange. Hops are present but initially
subdued, particularly for an IPA. Creamy and sweet with noticeable hop. A
roasted element to the malt explains the darker color. This toastiness
differentiates this ale from other IPA's for better or worse. Bold and gutsy - a rich
beer for a relatively lighter style.
Finish
Hops ramp up in strength up to the point of having a sharp edge which stops
just short of being unpleasant. All the palate flavors mentioned remain, nothing
fades. While the hops are predominate in the finish, the flavors do alternate back
and forth and nothing really cancels or hides the other. Also has a mild orange
peel at the end that comes and goes. The hop is cutting in a positive way.
Interesting how something creamy and have a dryness as well. Unique full flavor
remains in malt with some other elements fading.
Synopsis
A significantly strong beer, could not call this one weak. Impressively this beer
stops short of being too pungent. Relatively complex with sweet, tangy, and edgy
hop flavors. I can see this one impressing dedicated IPA drinkers. I particularly
enjoy the alternating flavor components, keeps the flavor full and complex as
opposed to "balancing out". Sometimes it is difficult to rate beers. We rate beers
for their style..what they claim to be. This one exceeds in overall solution. A
departure from the run-of-the-mill IPA but should I penalize the score for the
departure ? Not in this case, I like this IPA and intend to drink again.
