Scotch Style Ale List

Appearance
Dark brown in color and a nice dark red when held to a light. Very clean and clear,
no cloudiness. Head stands tall, particularly for the scotch ale style. The head is a
light tan and is creamy. Has a decent duration, again especially for style.
Moderate lacing on the glass. Great cottony and lasting head...a caramelly white
top to a dark ruby-red ale, light lacing. Appearance wise this one hits on all
cylinders.
Aroma
Nice and strong aroma, getting some pleasant scotch whiskey tones but they are
not overbearing. This beer also has a lot of tangy fruitiness....green apple,
raspberry, kiwi, and orange. Hardy and nutty, sweetness is present but well
controlled. A good earthy back end like an English Brown but more dynamic.
Palate
A nice creamy mouthfeel, especially for a scotch ale. A lightly sweet malt,
pleasant woody flavor, and a real scotch-like character and flavor, impressive.
Silky, smooth, and creamy but some rough edges add more character. This beer
has duality, soft, yet big on flavor. Some whiskey character but not overbearing like
some "oaked" beers.
Finish
The woody and scotch flavors grow in intensity, the tangy citrus sweetness finally
enters the picture but is held in check with some mild hops. Has a warming
quality that creeps in slow and comfortable. This beer doesn't smack you yet it
has strength and authority. Sweet with a little dirtiness. An aggressive ale that isn't
entirely overdone. This beer never breaks but transitions to a drier mouthfeel.
Synopsis
A very impressive scotch ale, the best definitive example of the style that I have
rated thus far. Very strong yet very smooth scotch character, woody flavors, well
balanced sweet malt, light hops, and an alcohol warming that is just that, it builds
slow to a warming character as opposed to burning. Not one dimensional but not
cluttered either, a true definitive example of the scotch ale style. Very drinkable
with a variety of textures with a different experience. Less sweetness and more
dark flavors than many other examples available.
Named for a medieval Scottish sword, Claymore Scotch Ale is our tribute to the
legendary "Wee Heavy" beers of Scotland. This malty, deep-ruby beauty features
lots of caramel sweetness, a reserved hop profile, and a subtle warming
character. Unlike its namesake, this beer only requires one hand, but it'll still make
you feel like nobility. Suggested food pairings: Pot roast with roasted vegetables,
seared lamb shank with white beans, bread pudding.
