List of Stouts
ABOUT THIS STOUT. A rich, dark brew smoothed out with a touch of roasted
chicory and organic Mexican coffee. Goodness beneath a bone white head.
Appearance
A dark black but a reddish brown when held to a light, a little light can actually
make it through this stout. Had a light tan, moderately tall, long lasting head
which held a creamy texture rather than a rocky one. Great black darkness, some
hints of red when held to a light. Distinct bubbly head that maintains its shape for
a period. Very good !
Aroma
Decent level of strength and complex. Detected nutty chicory, alcohol tones,
roasted malt, touch of lime citrus, and a light coffee scent in the background.
Coffee, chicory, anise. Deep roasted character is smoothed by a sweet and fruity
quality. Some chocolate, peanut, dark roast coffee, and warming.
Palate
More crisp than creamy and a touch more thin in mouthfeel than I am
accustomed to for a stout. Good (but light) roasted malt flavor, the essence
reminds me of a great porter rather than a full blown stout. Interesting bitter
chicory, clean, invigorating, very drinkable. Some coffee, some sweet and sour
fruit.
Finish
Some fullness develops, more roast and chicory, and the mild black coffee in the
background grows in intensity at the very end. A tang to the tongue that comes
from the chicory instead of the carbonation. The brew really flattens out with no
syrupy sweetness notes. The definitive taste subsides to its "bitters" essence.
Synopsis
A good stout, outside the box as Dogfish Head usually is. Just below our "A"
range, maybe chicory is just not my thing. I must admit nobody introduces unique
flavors to beer better than Dogfish Head. In spite of that, the chicory and coffee
present as what they are..."add-ins" and this just isn't my favorite stout, nor my
favorite Dogfish Head product. The chicory provides a unique sour note. This
stout seems a bit of a "one-note" beer but that "one-note" is done well. Very
drinkable with no harshness, I would recommend drinking this stout ice cold.
