Ayinger Brewery, Aying, Germany
Finest Bavarian Double Bock Beer
Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Appearance
Beautiful, dark, dark brown with some reddish tone. Clear, no cloudiness at all.
Dark tan rocky head. Great dark burgundy color. The Germans know their stuff in
brewing a dopplebock. Rich and expressive in color. Similar to a port wine in its
color composition. Head is good but dissipates a bit quickly.
Aroma
Medium strength, chocolate scents stand out, some alcohol tones, overall
pleasant, just would have preferred more strength and dimension. Preferable
aroma over many beers, nice malt overtones. Clean and honest to the beers
intent.
Palate
Pleasant, mild chocolate, mild malty sweet, a little thin but nothing harsh or
unpleasant. I like the cereal taste. Grainy and fairly full flavored, plenty of
sweetness but better balanced than some dopplebocks.
Finish
Still chocolaty smooth, mild sweetness and some alcohol tones, nothing
unpleasant. Does a good job of coupling flavor with a carbonation quality that
cuts its strength with a champagne quality I normally associate with some
Belgian beers.
Synopsis
Good flavor, nothing harsh. Mostly a chocolate tone with some roast. A criticism
would be that it is mostly one dimensional, good but not overly adventurous
compared to what is available today. Smooth and good, just not as exciting as
some other examples of the style.
