Lagunitas Brewing Co., Petaluma, CA
We believe this Special Ale is Something Unique. Feeding Brown Cane Sugar to
otherwise Cultured Brewery Yeast is a'kin to feeding Raw Shark to your Gerbel. It
is unlikely to ever occur in nature without Human Intervention. And it looks weird
besides. But it has happened and now it's too Late. Life is uncertain. Don't Sip.
Appearance
A light brown copper tone, orange copper when held to a light. Just a touch of
cloudiness. Off-white colored head, medium to long in duration, more creamy
than rocky in appearance.
Nice copper color and lasting head with lacing. This
beer has a relatively high specific gravity and uses the addition of brown sugar
which may lead to a different reaction and a natural cloudiness which may or may
not be forgiven by the beer enthusiast.

Aroma
Decent aroma strength, a very heavy hoppy nose, some citrusy orange peel, with
sweet malt in the background. The spicy hoppiness predominates in the aroma
despite the Brown Shugga Sweet Release name.
Rich warm sweet clashes with
a spicy hop presence. I don't think I've experienced an aroma quite like this. A lot of
citrus zest and pine scent swirls around a high alcohol content awareness.

Palate
Very smooth palate in this beer, both a clean water essence and a mildly creamy
mouth feel. Sweet malt, orange citrus, basically pleasant.
Wow, a powerful and
busy beer ! Sweet and sugary, somewhat thick with an immediate cutting sour. A
little smoky with citrus, vanilla, and toasted malt. The tang leads to the sour notes
as opposed to hoppy notes that would normally be described as bitter. The sour
is not a problem, but unique in its flavor presentation.

Finish
Strength picks up as the hops come stampeding in ! A hoppy bitter/sour quickly
balances out the sweet almost perfectly. Has a brief millisecond of sweet at the
very end with the final finish and aftertaste being hoppy, like the end of an IPA. Has
an alcohol warming sensation.
This one permeates the senses, both thin and
heavy on the tongue. The ale doesn't separate but is multidimensional. Sour and
spice remain, with a caramel sweet.

Synopsis
Admittedly interesting, my favorite Lagunitas beer so far. Neither one dimensional
nor the most complex in the world. Dimensions include sweet malt and citrus
quickly balanced out by strong hop and orange peel bitter. Wraps up more like an
IPA than a typical ale. Beer is warming but handles the 9.5% ABV well.
New
flavors, some essence of Belgian beer minus the subtle flavors. Grabs the drinker
and pummels you with flavor. This beer is plenty sweet but the tasty sour is the
most memorable component. Alcohol galore, hardy, and oddly fascinating !
