Great Lakes Brewing Co., Cleveland, OH
Who needs the power grid ? Not us, when we've got the full moon, bright stars,
good friends and blackout stout, an imperial stout with a hearty malt body and
bold hop flavor. This beer is brewed with all natural ingredients. No chemicals or
preservatives are used.

Appearance
Black as a stout should be and as the name implies. When held to a light just a
hint of red shows around the outer edges. Head is dark, mildly rocky, a little short
in height and duration. Black but on the lighter end of the "black scale". A little red
comes through. Head is not terribly lacking but is a little thin. Medium level of
rockiness and duration.
Aroma
Wow is the first word that comes to mind. Very impressive in both strength and
the multi-dimensional character. Suggests a strong and delicious flavor will be
present. Includes roasted malt, hoppy spice, and sweetness, specifically a citrus
tone of lime. A hint of chocolate lingers in the background as well. Alcohol notes
are present as is spice in the form of coriander and rosemary. Peat quality
permeates but doesn't overpower. Sweetness and some clean qualities as well.
Once again an American stout that rises above its contemporaries.
Palate
Decent mildly creamy mouth feel, some roasted character, and mild chocolate
are initially detected. Just barely on the thin side but crisp, balanced, and good.
Robust, rich and sweet, and delicious. The first sip grabs the drinker and is
reminiscent of a barley wine style ale minus the powerful warmth. I feel this is an
Imperial Stout & fortifying qualities are present. I am not surprised, Great Lakes
makes good beer !
Finish
Awesome, very full, very roasted malt, more sweet chocolate, the hoppy spice,
and the lime citrus all jump out. All dimensions are present and are alternating
as opposed to cancelling each other out. Lingering sweetness which is unique. It
blends its creamy quality with a definitive roast and alcohol punch. You wouldn't
mistake this for a milk stout. Tastes wonderful so I won't be too critical of the
lingering sweetness & slight thinness.
Synopsis
Excellent beer, a winner for Great Lakes. Not number one on a competitive list
but Blackout Stout can hold its own in the stout category. I appreciated the
uniqueness of the multi-dimensional flavors that alternate back and forth as
opposed to simply balancing each other. The flavors here literally dance around
the taste buds, then fade, then return, an interesting creation. Normally great
beers define their style, this one takes a left turn and defines its own. Nothing
negative is to be construed from this; make no mistake, you know you are
drinking a stout but something more. It tastes as if original malts are roasted and
additional malts were added later giving this a multi-faceted nature. Truly good,
one of the better beers I've had in recent memory.
