From our fields to your holiday. A malt driven scotch ale, made with 100%
Michigan grown barley and a blend of Pacific Northwest and Michigan hops. A bit
of cheer from the north country, sure to make any occasion festive.
Appearance
Nice light to medium orange copper color, clear, heavily carbonated, a light tan
head decent with some rocky character but light and airy, almost cloud-like. A
highly carbonated hiss is the greeting of this one. Amber to light brown.
Medium-clear, with a large rocky head. Good lookin' beer.
Aroma
Decent aroma strength, but has the aroma of a lighter beer. Pleasant sweet malt,
orange and lime citrus, maybe a touch of cherry, but also a mild woody and spicy
scent, a bit Scotch like. Light browned malt with adequate hop nose. Brown
sugars and citrus pop. Soft and well blended with some alcohol warmth. A very
minor metallic element is present and welcomed.
Palate
Some sweet malt and citrus, crisp carbonation, and clean water essence but very
much on the light side. Nice moderate well flavored ale with some lager
qualities. I like the solid malt taste coupled with a nice dry hoppiness. Slightly
nutty, slightly fruity with a good bitter. Soft and smooth where the acid provides the
bite to balance a general creaminess.
Finish
Definitely different. Overall light sweetness quickly falls away to make room for an
overriding blunt woody and mild hop flavor with a surprising lack of sweetness. A
bit of a dry finish with a mild trailing orange peel bitter. Light punch of hop in the
finish leaves a light dry bitterness. Full light malt and a citrus (lemon).
Synopsis
Awesome appearance and aroma. Flavor is decent and the approach is
interesting but this one was surprisingly overall light in flavor and heavy in
carbonation. The sweet is vaguely present, fades, with a hoppy ending. Would
have preferred more sweet and more balancing or back and forth alternating of
the flavors. A good beer but obviously NOT the star in the Bell's beer line. Another
good contribution from Bell's. Lighter than expected for a Christmas beer. Good
all-around, no strong elements other than a bias toward the malt. Imagine a well
hopped lightly presented English Brown.
