Bells Cherry Stout bottle cap
Bells cherry stout in a standard pint beer glass
Bell's Brewery, Inc., Comstock, MI
A mysterious dance of tart Michigan cherries with the dark, roasted malts of a big
and bold stout.
Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Appearance
Dark black with plenty of effervescence. Head is a medium tan, smooth and
creamy in appearance. The duration of the head was relatively short.
A dark
brown/black. A little rose tint to the head. Well carbonated, maybe overly so and
head dissipates quickly. Overall very good.

Aroma
Decent strength, basically cherry, cherry, cherry, with faint stout and alcohol tones
in the background. I would have preferred more multi-dimensional character as
opposed to the cherry overriding all else, even though it is called "Cherry Stout".
Medium strong, distinct sour cherry aroma with some strong coffee and licorice.
Full and rich with a touch of toffee and nuttiness as well.

Palate
Initial taste is tart cherry with some carbonation kick noticed. A bit thin, just a
minute amount of creaminess. Very cherry, and mostly one dimensional, would
have preferred more strength in the non-cherry flavor potential.
Initially tart with
cherry and coffee tones fighting for superemacy. A tang to the cherry with some
soft sweetness creeping in. Sweetness appears to come from toasted malt.
Qualities improve not so much to balance but to mirror each other.

Finish
A little more creaminess establishes itself. The cherry flavor itself is
multi-dimensional with different tart tones and a mild sweet tone dancing around
the tongue. The expected stout part of the flavor however is still just barely there at
the end.
Tart and dry mixed with rich malt. Leaves a layer of sour on the tongue
and in the sinuses. Acidic for the drinker as roast and sour double up to
overpower. This tart on tart would be a bit much to drink in any significant quantity.
Drinkers of Cabernet would like this finish.

Synopsis
As advertised a variety of cherry tart flavors are there but the big bold stout part
seems to be missing. Maybe a good dessert beer for cherry lovers but I found it to
be too one dimensional. I believe the cherry is significantly overdone, more
balance is needed here.
Sour cherry and stout work as a combination. This beer
lacks a multi-dimensional nature I would prefer.
