Great Divides Belgica IPA beer head
BELGICA - the Roman name for the Low Countries - is a marriage of the best in
American and Belgian brewing traditions. Belgian pilsner malt, a generous
amount of American and European hops and a unique Belgian yeast strain
combine to give Belgica big notes of citrus and spice, creating a lively
concoction perfect for spring in the Rockies - or the Ardennes. Suggested food
pairings: Thai curry mussels, crab cakes, roast turkey or pheasant, Taleggio or
Epoisses cheese.
Great Divide Brewing Co., Denver, CO
Appearance
A pale but attractive golden yellow and effervescent. Basically clear and clean, a
snow white head with nice height ad a creamy texture which picks up a little
chunkiness as it sits. Lacing on the glass is thick and impressive.
Light golden
color and effervescent...not bad.  White head and nice lacing. Its difficult to use a
comparison as this is a unique hybrid ale.

Aroma
Decent strength, strong hops as expected for an IPA but strongly balanced by a
more than usual sweet malt and citrus.
Malty with a little heat, a sour berry
essence, hoppy and spicy. Complex with a citrus lemon lime zest.

Palate
Mild, not weak, and not thin, but simply mild in its presentation. Has a light
creamy texture, light citrus, light sweet Belgian sugars and malt, with a bit of hop
starting in.
Smooth and a little silky with some acid from the hop giving a little
counterbalance. A little mild relative to more bold IPA's.

Finish
Hops pick up a bit in the end to give the drinker some traditional IPA flavor but
they are still significantly balanced down by the maltiness and Belgian sugar. The
aftertaste is that of a typical IPA but also presents on the milder side.
The hop
and spiciness lingers and adds to the appeal. Nice bottom end and perhaps the
brews best attribute. The sweetness still manifests throughout.

Synopsis
A good beer, probably more personally enjoyable to me as the IPA style is not a
personal favorite. I could see this leaving IPA enthusiast wanting for a stronger
IPA, like Great Divides own Titan for example. Ale citrus, malt, and spice in a mild
package with the stronger traditional IPA flavor held down until the very end.
I
appreciate the adventurous nature, a good but not great IPA, but the uniqueness
makes this one worth a try. A hybrid of a Belgian ale and IPA.
