Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Milton, DE
A serious India Pale Ale brewed with real apricots
Appearance
A golden copper, effervescent, clear, medium height off-white head with mildly
rocky character and medium duration. Pale to medium amber. Lustrous and well
carbonated. Head has decent staying power with medium lacing. Very clear,
borderline striking.
Aroma
Imagine that, an apricot aroma prevails. Malt and hops are there but barely
detectable, the apricot aroma overrides. Maybe a bit too one-dimensional apricot.
Definite apricot aroma, not entirely overpowering but close. The apricot seems
fresh, not syrupy, and some light hops are there. Lives up to advertising with very
light malt and a very subtle alcohol warmth.
Palate
Tangy, sweet, and crisp. Here again the apricot prevails. Significant carbonation.
The surprise of the brew, though relatively sweet, is how the apricot lends a
balancing sourness to the taste. All normal components are there....malt, hop,
etc. I was hoping for a richer mouth feel but I appreciate the result.
Finish
Sweet apricot flavor is quickly intense, then slowly fades as the hop flavor builds.
The hop flavor just barely overcomes the sweet apricot at the very end. The hops
are dulled significantly, more of a "thud" than a hop "bite". The carbonation stays
strong all the way through. No real departure from the palate. Slightly dry with a
pleasant prevailing sour tone. Fresh, crisp, and drinkable. Thin and
champagne-like quality, leaves the drinker with a similar mouth feel, tart, tangy,
and thin.
Synopsis
Lighter than expected, the apricot flavor overshadows. A dull hop presence and
crisp carbonation from beginning to end. A good refreshing summertime beer.
Easy drinking IPA but not very complex, the strength of the apricot just a bit
overdone. I like this ale, but this may have made an even better wheat beer.
Tends to be somewhat cutting but also has a delicate nature. A different type of
Dogfish Head.
