San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and
most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our
old fashioned porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the
ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh,
whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process
which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head
and intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974,

Appearance
Dark black, some red shows through the middle when held to a light.
Effervescent, head is a light tan, rocky after sitting, with significant duration. Dark
chocolate brown, excellent head with expressive rockiness. Great eye-appeal.
Carbonation disappears in pour to collect in the head. Reminiscent of a great
English Pub brew.
Aroma
Powerful, dark roast, a unique charred wood scent along with strong whiskey-like
alcohol tones, coffee and chocolate. Some faint fruity flavor as well, like that of
green grapes. Dark malt, coffee, and chocolate. Some fruity scent, I often have
trouble describing the fruity aromas but here a green Granny Smith apple nails it.
Very nice and expressive.
Palate
Roasted malt, a hint of chocolate, and plenty of tangy fruitiness. Has a decent
level of crispness, maybe a tad too much for a Porter, but basically delicious.
Grainy and slightly chewy. Alcohol, chocolate, and coffee. These are terms I may
use for an Imperial Stout and they are all there, just to a lesser extent. Stronger
than I remember it from years past, but a solid as a porter. More flavor
components can be unlocked by letting it warm a little.
Finish
Palate flavors grow in intensity. The charred wood, roasted malt, chocolate, and
tangy fruitiness all carry through. Very smooth drinking but it does have a bit of a
hop zing and alcohol warming at the very end. All of the powerful flavors tend to
mellow out and this could be the porter's greatest attribute. A sweetness
develops as does a mouth coating milky texture.
Synopsis
An impressive and definitive example of a Porter. Plenty of roast but much milder
than a stout. The tangy fruitiness, woody flavor, and alcohol tones are all present
and pleasantly balanced. A full but smooth porter, maybe Anchor Brewing's best
product. I love this porter but I think Anchor may change it slightly from year to
year, maybe a problem for a rater, but always fun for the drinker. This is a very
good porter and maybe the brewer's best style.
