Anchor Summer Beer beer head
Anchor Brewing Co., San Francisco, CA
Anchor Summer is the first American wheat beer in modern times. Our first brew
of this light and refreshing beer was in the summer of 1984. Anchor Summer is
an all-malt beer, and over 50% of its malt comes from malted wheat. It is
fermented with a traditional top-fermenting "ale" yeast because we prefer the
clean flavors developed by this yeast. We believe that this style best celebrates
the refreshingly light flavor of malted wheat. You may notice that the head on this
beer is unusually abundant, with a consistency similar to whipped egg whites.
This is due to protein contributed by the wheat. The brewers at Anchor are proud
to have revived not only rich hearty dark beers, but also this light crisp style of a
modern American wheat beer.
Appearance
Pale golden color, effervescent, and surprisingly clean for a wheat beer, this one
must be filtered. Head is white, stands tall, good duration, stays creamy and
pulls away from the glass as it dissipates.
A strikingly fluffy white head. Intense
for such a delicate beer. Rocky and attractive accentuates an off-golden
appearance. Nice clarity....fresh and inviting.

Aroma
Decent aroma strength, wheat malt scents with coriander spice, and a crisp lime
and lemon zest. All of this is surrounded by a mild version of the signature
Anchor Steam hop.
Undoubtedly wheat and clean water, malty aroma, lemon
citrus sour, and additional yeasty elements.

Palate
A smooth clean water essence yet very flavorful. The lime and lemon zest and
wheat malt flavor present from the beginning in a light and refreshing fashion.
Tangy and tart with a little sweetness sneaking in late. Very yeasty and somewhat
hoppy.

Finish
All palate flavors develop more intensity then the wheat and hop gains some
ground on the citrus sweet. Finishes with a mild presence of the signature
Anchor Steam hop and just a bit of saltiness.
Crisp and refreshingly mild,
eventually a touch of pleasant sour pops in. Slightly dry with a touch of salt.

Synopsis
An impressive wheat ale with a crisp and light presentation. Probably my favorite
Anchor Steam product even though their Porter and Foghorn barleywine are both
excellent. As advertised, an awesome summer beer, thirst quenching, smooth,
light, and drinkable, yet complex and full-flavored.
Mind blowing meringue head,
like a nimbus cloud. Anchor strattles the line between lager and ale. Mild
compared to many wheats yet tasty. Not a sipping beer, this is a summer time
thirst quenching gulping beer.
