Altbiers or "Alts" as they are nicknamed are a special subset of the
ale category. Appropriately included at the end of the top
fermented beers in our list and thus just before the bottom
fermented beers in our list. Altbier is made with a top fermenting
yeast and it is fermented at temperatures warmer than lager beers,
but not as warm as the typical ale. The reduction in fermentation
temperature and the practice of storing or "lagering" these ales
results in a beer with light ale qualities but also the smoother
drinkability normally associated with the lager style. Altbier is
similar to and a rival of Kolsch style beer but altbiers are not
always made with pale malts.
