Founders Centennial IPA in a pint beer glass
Founders Centennial IPA beer head picture
Dry Hopped, Unfiltered
Founders Brewing Company, Grand Rapids, MI
Appearance
A vibrant brownish, orange gold, cloudy, but ever ties as dry hopped in
nonfiltered. Off-white colored head is short to moderate in height and
duration, but had a thick creamy character and thick weblike lacing on
the glass.
Cloudy amber orange with a slow forming and  unexpressive head. I
believe much of this can be attributed to the structure of the ale. The dry
hopping works against the look, so this should be taken into
consideration.

Aroma
Has a full and relatively strong aroma. Strong hops predominate but
are not overbearing at all. Almost as strong is the complex citrus. The
citrus consist of cherry, orange, pear, and mild banana. More balanced
than most IPAs, the hops do not drive out the other elements.
A marriage of piny hop and caramel malt. Very attractive blend of hop,
that awakens the senses. Floral and mild citrus with a distant honey
sweet.

Palate
Moderate creaminess at first, surprisingly smooth and easy drinking,
almost too smooth. A complex blend of mildly sweet malt and citrus
predominates in the initial taste.
Hops flow into the complex concept of the brew. Thirst quenching and
mouth filling malt. A high level of bitters and acid as an IPA should
have, but certainly not one note. Piny and chewy with a little sweet.

Finish
The carbonation and hop zing kicks in and in a very controlled fashion.
The citrus flavors are allowed to alternate back in and out but the full
and smooth edged hops stay a half step ahead.
It's a bit harsh, but I enjoyed the hop content. The creaminess
subsides to more of the lip puckering bite. Spicy and citrusy zest are
the polishing notes.

Synopsis
A tasty brew, complex with the requisite hop in multitude of citrus,
orange, cherry pear and mild banana tones. Surprisingly balanced for
an IPA, this seems to be entirely dry hopped with no acidic bite. The
bold hop has had its teeth removed. Excellent for those who find this
style a bit harsh, but if you crave a hop with a sharp bite, this could
leave you wanting for more strength.
A complete and challenging IPA, in a good way. I'm finding myself
enamored with dry or wet hopping in the brewing process in general.
This is an ale that can be enjoyed on a surface level, but its complexity
is up to Founders typical standards.

Spoetzl Brewery, Shiner, TX
Shiner 100 Commemorator beer bottle picture
Shiner One Hundred Commemorator bottle cap
Shiner Commemorator Dopplebock in a lager beer glass
Shiner Commemorator Bock beer head picture
Appearance
Crystal clear, effervescent, only a medium dark reddish brown tone.
The head was moderate in height, smooth and creamy, light beige
color, with relatively short duration. Very little lacing on the glass.
Clean effervescent dark red with a light self-sustaining beige head.
Not mind blowing but a good-looking beer nonetheless.

Aroma
Bravo, nice and strong, particularly for this style. Pleasantly complex
with sweet malt, chocolate, Apple, pear, and controlled alcohol
tones.
A powerful and tart ale like quality. Full in all senses. Malty, rich, and
a contrasting burnt sugar sweet to balance. A very educated smell
to an exciting looking lager.

Palate
Smooth yet easy drinking, but impressively full flavored right from
the first sip. Heavy sweet malt, tasty chocolate, and initially light
citrus consisting of apple and pear.
Sweet flavor that is full of grain and caramel. Hop is playful
throughout as the lager maintains its presence. A quality double
bock that is both spicy and salty in addition to the sweet.

Finish
The intensity grows, the malt and chocolate gains strength and
even has a light roastiness. Despite that, this stays "bock sweet" as
it should. The citrus tones and light acid grow the most compared
to the palate, but this even has a mild creamy feel on the way down.
Mild tart metallic flavor enters the scene and complements all of the
pre-stated palate points.

Synopsis
Pleasantly surprised, a wonderfully done dopplebock. The best
American version of this style that I have tried. I would recommend
this brewery consider making this their main offering, the regular
Shiner Bock is not this impressive, it should be replaced with this. I
hope we do not have to wait another 100 years for this level of
quality from Shiner again.
A shockingly good beer from Shiner. This completely exceeded
expectations. I think it's great to see an American brewery Excel in a
style that they are known for. A very pleasant surprise and thanks to
Shiner brewery.
100 years of Shiner beer. All of us at the quote Little Brewery Unquote
and Shiner would like to thank you for your friendship and support for
the past 100 years. Commemorator, our centennial offering, is brewed
in the robust classic German "stark" style and it embodies the Old
World heritage and tradition Shiner has proudly stood for since 1909.

Thirsty Dog Old Leghumper Porter beer bottle
Thirsty Dog Old Leghumper porter in a pint beer glass
Old Leghumper porter beer head picture
Old Leghumper bottle cap
Thirsty Dog Brewing Co., Frederick, Maryland        www.thirstydog.com
Appearance
Dark brown, a deep reddish brown when held to a light. Clear and
effervescent but this was made a fault, a good porter should be dark
enough so that I can't tell that. Head was a light beige, thick and creamy,
with nice lacing on the glass.
Solid brown/black with a red hue up to a light. Head is beige and is
moderate in size with decent legging. Clean and sedentary.

Aroma
Moderate strength of aroma, has an odd tanginess with a sweet and
sour lemon and orange citrus tone. Some mild alcohol tones and a light
roast, too light in fact, for a porter style.
Light to medium roast with a good bit of cocoa tones. Mild fruitiness adds
to the brews complexity, well-balanced and inviting.

Palate
Smooth, a bit too smooth for a Porter. This beer has a very light roast and
light malt and a tangy orange citrus.
Coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt battle for supremacy over a flat
chicory canvas. The Porter's high points are its complexity of craft and
availability of sweet and ale sours.

Finish
All the palate flavors carry through with just a little added strength and a
carbonation kick.
Finishes  traditionally with a tannic bite and sharp esters.

Synopsis
I almost hate to be this critical because I like all of Thirsty Dogs other
offerings, but this Porter, while not gross, did not impress me at all. The
overall patent malt roast quality is much too light and thin. The citrus
which dominated the flavor was on unusually tangy presentation that
came across as strange.
This Porter is sincere in its intent but becomes bitter as a whole. Not a
bad Porter just a little underwhelming, not Thirsty Dogs best.
Reviewed 1/28/2010 Old Leghumper Porter from Thirsty Dog Brewing Co.
This robust Porter is dark brown in color and full bodied with a malty
sweet taste. Deep roasted, yet silky smooth! Two types of roasted
malts, including roasted chocolate malt give this beer its
award-winning flavor. World beer cup Gold Medalist 2002 and bronze
medalist, 2000.

Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Milton, DE        www.dogfish.com
What you have here is an imperial India Pale Ale featuring a
single, constant, 90 minute hop addition. It's balanced by a
ridiculous amount of English Two-row Barley. Then we dry-hop it
in every tank.
Appearance
A vibrant orange-ish and yellowish copper,  significant but evenly blended
cloudiness. The head is just barely off-white color, has good height and
duration, maintains its creamy foamy character with lacing.
This is an ugly brew! The color is a blend of browns, golds, and water. Not
particularly carbonated, but still manages a formidable head with
exemplary lacing. The dry hopping and conditioning allow me to give the
appearance some leeway.

Aroma
A strong aroma no doubt, the expected hop signature is there but I was
surprised that other components stand just as strong. I am detect the
orange, cherry, sweet malt, and probably the most pleasant alcohol tones
that I have experienced. All of these components stand just as tall as the
piney hop in this aroma.
Big, spicy, warm and sweet. Fruits and pepper dance about over a heavy
malt. Brown sugar, banana, and five spice. The aroma has a crisp inviting
profile with a dark rum essence.

Palate
Full flavored as expected, significant creaminess with orange and cherry
citrus and even early alcohol tones right away. Tasty with the expected hop
although so far the hop has unexpectedly been in the "back seat".
Silky
warmth betrays a sheer power. Taste includes molasses, grape, oak, and
brown sugar. This beer is massive yet somehow manages to be
refreshing. The refreshment is relative to an ultra-strong English brown,
very noteworthy.

Finish
The strength picks up and the IPA hop grabs the stage but the hop is still
surprisingly controlled by the citrus which has transitioned smoothly into a
tangy quality. The strong but pleasant alcohol tones even balance out the
hop bitters.
A great winter time brew, there should be 3" or more of snow on the ground
to fully appreciate this. A powerful ale with character, clever, and wild in its
approach.

Synopsis
Excellent, and I will buy this again, but that is always the case with Dogfish
Head. Full and complex, with sweet and tangy orange and cherry citrus
presentations, warming alcohol tones, and authoritative but shockingly
balanced IPA hop spice. As a personal preference, I like this better than
their 60 minute, however to the IPA fanatic, I would have to recommend the
60 minute over this. Maybe its too much dry hopping and not enough initial
hopping, but the IPA purist may find the hop here too well controlled.
Bold
monster-like ambition. Not my all-time favorite IPA but garners respect for
its sheer adventure and impressive execution.

Lagunitas Pale Ale New Dogtown beer bottle
New Dogtown bottle cap
New Dogtown Pale Ale in a standard pint beer glass
Lagunitas New Dogtown Pale Ale beer head picture
Lagunitas Brewing Co., Petaluma, CA
This is not the orginal Pale Ale as brewed in far away 1993 in the back of
the Old House of Richards Building in the West Marin hamlet of Forest
Knolls right next to little Lagunitas. It is way better. Back then the beer
tasted like broccoli and kerosene and the carbonation ate right through
and drained your stomach into your gut.
Appearance
A nice medium golden tone, clear and effervescent, slightly off-white
head is initially tall, foamy, and airy, of moderate duration with light
lacing.
Dazzling and effervescing. Carbonation swirls like a torrent in a
clear orange gold. Lasting medium white head.

Aroma
Strong aroma, a full IPA -like hop bouquet, I am getting grapefruit,
lemon & lime zest, and a little orange peel. Impressively complex for
the pale ale style of beer.
Heavy citrus and piny hop. Lotsa orange and
grapefruit, an eye opening tangy and zesty blend.

Palate
Crisp and light, initial flavors are lemon citrus and carbonation zing
with a touch of hop. Not bad but not as exciting as I had hoped.
Starts
with a grapefruit flavor. Tart and light sweet, a little silky, a little cutting,
seemingly a one or two note beer but I think closer inspection will
reveal more.

Finish
Hops abound, a bit more like an IPA than a plain pale ale. Has a
grapefruit and lemon peel zest in the background, but the hops
definitely carry the day in the finish. Not really any sweetness or
balance to speak of at this stage.
Finish flows from the palate well, no
real transition other than a fortifying hop. Though some of the sours of
grapefruit remain, the acidic hop bite provides a crispness typical of
an IPA.

Synopsis
More like a strong IPA than a typical pale ale. The aroma was great,
but the strong hop tended to overshadow the other components that
were trying to make this a complex beer. The hops predominated to
make this seem almost one note by hiding the "ale" part of this pale
ale.
I appreciate Lagunitas attempts at big flavors. I like the grapefruit
flavor platform for the presentation of a well hopped ale. Perhaps with
more balance to the hop this would've scored better.
