This classic Belgian-style White Beer is brewed with unmalted wheat, a
touch of oats, and then traditionally spiced with coriander and orange
peel for a crisp, refreshing taste and spicy aroma.
Appearance
A very cloudy pale yellow-ish orange, head is white, not very tall, and
dissipates rapidly. Lacing on the glass is decent. Unassuming
cloudiness to an off-golden somewhat orange hue. Head is of modest
intensity with light legging and short duration.
Aroma
Good aroma strength. An orange citrus zest dominates, then you get
wheat and oat scents, then very mild coriander spice in the background.
A grabbing bouquet of aromas. Reminiscent of some Belgians with
apple, nut, salt, honey, and background sours. Has an impressive cider
aroma quality.
Palate
Crisp and flavorful, an orange citrus zest, full flavored wheat, and a
pleasant carbonation zest. Crisp and smooth with orange flavor. A tangy
cider quality and some nuttiness. Spicy components appear at different
intervals. With all the flavor components this beer is still clean and silky,
wonderfully drinkable. A terrific summertime choice.
Finish
The wheat flavor really takes over here but the orange zest and coriander
spice alternates back in periodically. Finishes hearty and "wet",
refreshing, thirst-quenching, and full flavored for the style. An acidic
tartness wipes the palate clean and transitions well into the finish.
Palate flavors continue with some spiciness of hop and residual yeast.
Synopsis
Another nice entry from Two Brothers Brewing. This is a full flavored
wheat example but also with an easy drinking quality. Full wheat, orange
citrus zest, coriander and hop spice, all good with an alternating
balance. We published a news story when we heard about this relatively
new beer and I am glad we finally found it to try. I find myself increasingly
enamored with this brewery. They excel in heavy and light styles, and
those in-between. A good bit of character in a light wheat package.

Beer Blitz Rater Comments
A farmhouse ale brewed with spelt, an ancestor to wheat. Refreshing,
straw-colored body with a spicy fermentation profile.
Appearance
A very pale yellow gold, with a "floating haze" cloudiness, though
cloudiness is not really out of place for this style of beer. Head was
white and tall, not very dense, maintained a styrofoam-like quality, was
long lasting, and lacing on the glass was good. A cloudy yellow with a
white head. Solid lacing adds to an otherwise ho-hum initial look.
Aroma
A nice balance of orange zest and citrus sweet, spice, wheat, and
alcohol tones. I would have preferred more overall strength of aroma.
Light and fruity with a cider quality. Complex yeast, citrus elements,
namely cherry, apple, and grape, and a light blend of hop.
Palate
Very light initially, a clean water essence, wheat, light sweet malt, and
orange citrus, and a little bit of spiciness creeps into the palate. A
deep wheat flavor, silky smooth, then dry, has bread, coriander, clover,
honey, berry, and salt flavor components. Flavors recede, then emerge
again...interesting.
Finish
Rapidly gains strength, a pleasantly stark contrast with a relatively thin
palate. A hoppy bitter predominates at the end but the other flavors of
orange zest, sweet, orange peel bitter, and wheat alternates back in
periodically. Complex flavor components converge into a dry and sour
ending. The hops are stronger at the end adding a little bit of
"dirtiness" to a delicate brew.
Synopsis
An interesting beer but I find this a bit outside the definitive saison ale
realm. A thin palate sharply contrasted by a fuller finish. This has the
requisite citrus, malt, hop, and spice components and flavors do
alternate. This also has a sweet and tart essence to it. The bitters
here seemed to be more of a traditional hop addition as opposed to
the high fermentation temperature sharpness I would associate with a
saison style ale. This ale does many things well but is all over the
place. I thought it could use more sweetness and fullness in the
palate. I would enjoy this with food, it could compliment almost
anything. It falls a little short of other Saison ale competitors.

Kellerweis is deeply complex, with flavors reminiscent of ripe bananas
and spicy clove. This hazy golden beer glows with suspended yeast
creating a velvety texture. To serve, pour two-thirds into a glass, swirl
and pour the rest.
Appearance
A pale yellowish / whitish gold. Glowing tones, cloudy as advertised but
presents as an attractive evenly distributed wheat haze. Head is
off-white of decent height and duration. Impressive thick lacing on the
glass. A cloudy gold, true to recipe. Dead on definitive Hefeweizen,
head dissipates a little quickly but the beer does have pronounced
legging.
Aroma
KA-BAM ! This aroma is strong enough to earn your respect.
Predominate banana scents, cloves, and a nice wheat not far off in the
background. This one is spot on as advertised per the label.
Unadulterated wheat and a terrific lemon citrus sour. A great aromatic
with summer herbs and a complete wheat nose. Perhaps even a little
basil for a solid platform. Has depth and class.
Palate
Complex flavor profile and an impressive ale creaminess. Some
banana sweet, good pale malt, light hop, and a delicious wheat is not
far behind. Wildly creamy, dry, and sour, all at the same time. Everything
just feels right. A strong bite, yet soothing as well. This beer
understands itself and heightens it's own pluses. Controlled and
crafted, a spectacular example of a wheat beer.
Finish
Here is where you know you are having a Hefeweizen. The strong and
wonderful wheat flavor takes over the lead but the banana, clove, and
light hop (in that order) continues to chime in from the background. Soft
and controlled and with a tongue-curling sour, Terrific ! The beer
seems to dissolve on the tongue with a freshness remaining.
Synopsis
Pleasantly surprised, my new favorite from Sierra Nevada, and my new
favorite wheat ale period. Complex with banana, clove, pale malt,
awesome wheat, and very light hop. I remember Sierra Nevada being
about the best American brewery decades ago, then being passed up
by Bell's, Flying Dog, etc. Well, this beer marks a new milestone for
Sierra Nevada, their first perfect 100 score on Beer Blitz and a trend that
could put Sierra Nevada back in my top few favorite breweries. Sierra
Nevada, already a great brewery, steps outside of their own comfort
zone with this one and in a spectacular fashion. Good grasp of flavors,
my favorite Sierra Nevada product bar none.

Alefest trip report June 27, 2009
Alefest was great this year, it all started at the door when I was asked for my ID to
get in which was nice for someone my age. Inside the band Groove Doctor was
playing and they sounded great all day. I picked up some keychain bottle openers
and coasters but my favorite was the flat credit card type opener for my wallet that
was handed out at the Samuel Adams table. The gentlemen at the SODZ.org
homebrew club table asked me about the Beer Blitz logo on my shirt. He was nice
enough to allow me to put a stack of Beer Blitz business cards on his table. We have
been thinking about homebrewing and will be checking out this club later. Now for
the really good part, the beer ! I tried many beers, the following stand-out in my
memory.
1. Green Flash Double Stout - Nice and complex, multiple fruit tones, cherry, lime,
kiwi, good malt, a nice chocolaty dark roast, and controlled hops.
2. Nightstalker (draught) - An imperial stout at the Goose Island table. I was very
impressed. Full and creamy with lime and orange citrus flavors, a light chocolaty
roast, and lightly hopped.
3. The Brooklyn Brewing table had some surprises I hadn't seen, called Local 1 &
Local 2. The Local 1 was a lighter colored saison type ale and the Local 2 was a
darker colored more typical ale. Both were higher ABV (over 9%) and were delicious.
4. The Sam Adams table had two beer samples which are not released yet. Sample
A was a Pilsner, Sample B an ale. We were able to vote on these. I voted for
Sample A - a crisp, grainy, lightly fruity and slightly dry pilsner. The winner will be
released in Jan. 2010. I hope the pilsner is the overall winner !
5. The Hoppin Frog Silky Porter lived up to its name. Smooth and silky in texture,
light roast, sweet malt, a touch of salt, and an interesting tanginess.
I was not the only Beer Blitz rep there so other comments will be posted later. Alefest occurs at other
locations as well so be sure to check out the link below for more opportunities to attend this great event.

Like Adam and Eve, Isaac and Ishmael, Mao and Confuscious, Good
and Evil, Day and Night, Hittites and Visigoths, John and Lorena, or
Groucho and Moe, Ales and Lagers are as different as can be. Still, we
must love each for who they are, separately but equally, with liberty, and
justice, for all. Cheers!
Lagunitas Brewing Co., Petaluma, CA
Appearance
Impressive, an attractive medium golden tone, clear as a bell, and
effervescent. Head is snow white, tall, and with a creamy and dense
consistency. Duration is good and the lacing on the glass is also
good. A perfect pilsner appearance, I wouldn't change a thing for this
style. A true golden and beautiful hue. Well carbonated with a
superlative white foamy head. Pours like a draft. Striking and inviting.
Aroma
Great strength, especially for the pilsner style. Grains, a light malt, a
little cherry citrus sweet, medium hop, and even mild alcohol tones.
Traditional malt and requisite sours from the hops. Some sweetness
and graininess. A complex beer that can still be appreciated by its
ability to nail the basics.
Palate
A full and flavorful pilsner. Silky and a light creaminess, yet still has the
requisite grains, carbonation, and hop presence. Includes a very mild
citrus sweet, basically a light cherry and grape. Soft yet crisp with a full
body. Silky mouthfeel is invigorating. Sweetness builds but doesn't
overstep itself. Builds flavor and satisfies thirst simultaneously.
Finish
More expected graininess kicks in strong and the hops claim some
authority here as well. The citrus sweet and malt remains but off in the
background. Coats the mouth and throat with a silky softness. Finish
is just slightly drier and introduces a solid hop bite with some salt.
Malt remains in limbo and is satisfying all-around. Not delicate, not
overbearing, just traditional pilsner.
Synopsis
Wow, complexity not often seen in a pilsner. You could almost say a
pilsner that drinks like an ale ! Has the requisite grains, light malt, and
hop, with some expertly crafted additions. My favorite pilsner to date
and favorite Lagunitas product to date, I would recommend this to any
pilsner beer drinker. A nice example of a beer that meets expectations
of the style. A definitive Czech style beer, I could picture sitting in
Prague sipping this beer in the town square.
